Bethlehem Stone Church, Tenth Legion

Five miles south of New Market, Virginia, on the west side of the old Valley Pike (Route 11) sits Bethlehem Stone Church. This small and unassuming stone church rests in the shadow of a newer brick church in the County of Rockingham, where Arkton and Tenth Legion Roads meet in the small community of Tenth Legion.
Bethlehem Stone Church witnessed and survived four years of Civil War. It was used to treat wounded soldiers, and to hold prisoners. The church grounds housed repeated encampments and soldier names remain written on the walls. The church suffered damaging artillery shelling, and it stood as a silent witness to "The Burning". Through it all the little stone church emerged and continued to serve the spiritual needs of the community beyond the first half of the next century.
